Chairman's Message

Dear members and supporters of the Friends of Eritrea/UK

A Project to Support my former elementary School: Adi Geda Elementary School/ መባእታ ቤት ትምህርቲ ዓዲገዳ

As a former pupil of Adi Geda Elementary School/መባእታ ቤት ትምህርቲ ዓዲገዳ, I recently received two letters. One of the letters is addressed personally to me and the other to residents and former residents of the two villages, Adi Gered & Adi Geda, which use the school. I am attaching copies of both letters, Here  in Tigrigna.

For those of you who do not understand Tigrigna, the letters show that the school, which is one of the oldest schools to be established in Eritrea (late 1940s), requires financial support to buy teaching resources such as computers and basic facilities such as chairs and desks for pupils and teachers. I have not got the exact figure of the number of children, but I understand that the school receives about 100 new pupils every year.  Unfortunately, some of the children have to attend lessons sitting in the floor because of lack of chairs and desks and they do not have access to computers.  I have also received some excellent photos of the children and the school.

As one of the main objectives of the Friends of Eritrea in the United Kingdom is to support educational institutions in Eritrea, this is a good project to support.  Of course, as a beneficiary of this fantastic school, I have a vested interest. This is the school where I learned my ABC (ፊዳላት) and started to learn maths, history, geography, and basic sciences in my mother language. It gives me great pleasure to see this great school continue to teach children in their mother language.  This school has also produced some innovative Eritreans such as my childhood friend Yemane Russom, who was one of the early developers of Tigrigna and Geeze software for computers.

The Friends of Eritrea UK will support the School's list of Renovations and Development. Specifically, we will help these children get access to the vast resources of the World Wide Web, allowing the school to buy computers, TV  and related infrastructure. The full list of needs is Here (english) and Here (tigrigna)

Therefore, I am writing to ask you to support this appeal by sharing this information with your friends and colleagues or by joining our team of fundraisers. (eMail: Chairman@friendsoferitrea.co.uk )
